Overview

From thermal duty to mechanical layout

The enquiry starts with both streams and their operating conditions. Thermal selection establishes the required heat-transfer surface and flow arrangement. Mechanical design then addresses the shell, pressure boundary, connections and installation constraints.

Liquid service

A standard concentric arrangement is a starting point for general liquid duties. The actual flow pattern must satisfy heat transfer and pressure-drop requirements while allowing the intended cleaning strategy.

Gas service

Low-density gases can require large volumetric flows. An enlarged shell and larger shell-side connections can be considered to accommodate the stream. Inlet distribution and pressure drop need to be assessed together.

Evaporation space

An enlarged shell with the plate pack positioned lower can provide liquid inventory and vapour space for a flooded or kettle-type duty. The liquid level, vapour outlet and circulation arrangement belong to the system design.

Condensate collection

A plate pack positioned higher in the shell can leave space for condensate collection. Condensate outlet, level control and non-condensable gas handling should be included in the specification. An integrated receiver is a project option, not a universal feature.

Match the installation

Supply available space, lifting restrictions, insulation allowance, nozzle positions, flange requirements and pipe loads where applicable. For a replacement, provide the existing general arrangement and piping interfaces.

Engineering questions

Can nozzle positions be copied from an existing exchanger?

Provide the existing drawing for assessment. Matching the external arrangement does not by itself establish thermal or mechanical equivalence.

Are all illustrated arrangements offered for every BPS model?

No. The illustrations explain configuration concepts; the selected model and project design determine the available arrangement.
