Process gas heaters and coolers

Gas volume, pressure drop and the possibility of condensation drive the configuration.

Overview

Accommodating gas volume

Gas-side heat transfer often involves a larger volumetric flow than liquid service. The existing JINCHEN application guidance generally places the gas on the shell side, where the shell and nozzle dimensions can be adapted. The final side assignment is confirmed during selection.

Compressor aftercoolers

State gas composition, pressure, discharge temperature and flow reference conditions. If cooling creates condensate, include the expected liquid phase and the drainage requirements in the system specification.

Gas heating and heat recovery

Process gas heaters, boil-off gas duties and gas heat recovery require the full operating envelope. Include minimum flow and start-up conditions as well as the nominal point. Available pressure drop is especially important where the gas-side driving pressure is limited.

Superheating and desuperheating

Indicate the saturation condition and the required temperature margin. If a stream crosses a phase boundary, the duty must be treated as a phase-change process rather than a simple single-phase temperature reduction.

Information needed for selection

  • Gas composition, moisture and condensable components
  • Mass flow or volume flow with reference conditions
  • Operating pressure and allowable pressure drop
  • Inlet / outlet temperatures and expected phase changes

Detailed application scenarios

Compressor interstage and suction cooling

Process duty

Remove compression heat before the next stage or condition the suction gas using water, glycol or a compatible cooling circuit.

Selection considerations

Review gas composition, pressure loss, dew point and liquid carryover. Cooling can cause condensation, so the exchanger and downstream separator must be considered together.

Boil-off gas warming

Process duty

Warm cold vapour before downstream handling, using a suitable heating utility.

Selection considerations

Define the full inlet-temperature range, utility control, startup sequence and differential thermal expansion. Low-temperature toughness and avoidance of local freezing require project-specific review.
